My composition journey started with singing. I have a love of church and choral music born from constant exposure to four-part harmony in church. I had heard a few choirs as a child, and quickly developed a love for singing myself, and seeing what could be done with the voice. At around fifteen, I started messing around with melodies and chords, with a very rudimentary understanding of the rules or processes of composition.
Things really took flame when I submitted two pieces to Cantate Domino for their 2022 January concerts. One of those pieces, Psalm 20, was accepted. By that time I was signed up for Faith Builder’s Winter Term, and took in some music classes there. For the following 3 seasons, I’ve been fortunate enough to have a composition on Cantate Domino’s repertoire, and the group also recorded Psalm 20 on their 2024 summer tour.
I continue to enjoy singing, and probably count it as one of my first loves in music, more than composition, with choral conducting hotly competing for the lead. In my spare time I love to read, buy books to read later, and play disc golf.
